The L.A. Mayer, Museum for Islamic Art, was first inaugurated in 1974 in Jerusalem with the aim of displaying Islamic Art in its glory. The L.A. Mayer, Museum for Islamic Art is the only museum of its kind in Israel, and it holds one of the most important collections of Islamic art in the world. Our permanent gallery offers visitors a panoramic and in-depth look at the treasures of art in the Muslim world that reflect the richness of styles that characterises Islamic art: ancient Quran pages, useful objects, pottery, metal and glass, jewellery, carpets and more.
The Museum aims to encourage and develop the research and study of Islamic art and serves as a bridge of understanding between Jews and Arabs living side by side. Today more than ever, the revitalized museum offers visitors a new perspective on understanding Muslim civilization, through dialogue with contemporary art and through intercultural discourse.
In its role as a culture and education centre, the museum offers multidisciplinary experiences and serves as a vibrant centre of attractions for many visitors. Among other things, the museum sees as its mission to tie the threads between the Arabic culture and language with the culture of Jews originally from Spain and other Arab countries. The museum also acts as a gathering place for the intercultural meeting of intellectuals, writers, poets, artists and musicians. The museum constitutes a source of inspiration for creativity and promotes discourse based on tolerance, dialogue, mutual respect and equality.
The Education Department at the museum offers a wide variety of programs, activities and theatrical tours suitable for different ages and the curricula of the Ministry of Education. The visit to the museum exposes the students to meaningful and memorable learning experiences outside of their school. Tours at the museum consist of a variety of educational activities and encourage high-level thinking skills. The tours and programs are selected and tailored to each group with the close supervision of our staff.
We look forward to hosting you at our exhibitions and to enriching you all year round in our diverse educational activities.
Sincerely,
- Nadim Sheiban – Executive Director
- Dr. Ella Levy - Director of Education
- Staff of the department of education and guided tours.
