The Qajar Period

The Qajar dynasty ruled in Iran in the years 1781 to 1925. Origins of Qajar painting can be traced to the preceding Safavid period, but it was mainly influenced by European art that penetrated the Iranian culture, especially the court circles, and that inspired the period’s oil paintings that were done in rich, dark hues. The principle subjects of the artwork were portraits of the rulers and the women of his court, among others. Also produced during the Qajar period were lacquered pencases, metalware with enamel decoration, textilesand magnificent jewelry.
